We are delighted to announce that the 2021 recipient of the Mackersy Property Emerging Athletes scholarship was Ollie Gilmour.
Ollie (pictured second from the right) is part of the debuting New Zealand team at the 2022 Youth Foiling Gold Cup (YFGC). The YFCG is a worldwide youth circuit for under 25’s and will see Ollie and his teammates compete against some of the best youth sailors in the world. The boats used by the team, Persico 69Fs, are described as ‘mini–America’s Cup boats’, and therefore, the YFCG is likely to create pathways for the NZ crew to gain seats in the youth circuit of the 37th Americas Cup Regatta.
After completing their first practise event in Miami, Ollie and his team are now settled in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, awaiting the next round which will be held in Slovenia. With very little training time had in the boats the crew are looking forward to getting out and developing their skills further now they have gotten the feel for racing. The teams goal is to qualify for the final series in December.
Originally from Dunedin, the 20 year old previously sailed in the Mastercard Youth Training Programme and regularly competed in match racing including the NZ Open Teams Racing Nationals. Ollie attended the Open World Championships in Italy in 2017 with Russell Coutts and won the Harken NZ Youth Match Racing Championships in 2020.
Not only is Ollie part of the wider Mackersy family, but he’s the exact fit for our criteria for the Emerging Talent Scholarship. We are very proud to be involved in his plan to take on the elite sailing world and will watch his progress with pride over the next 12 months. Good luck Ollie – please follow his progress on Instagram @rnzys_69f_racing.
