Hokonui Fashion Awards 2023 Article

Designers and fashion enthusiasts alike flocked to Gore on the 29th of July to be part of the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards, a highlight of the national fashion calendar. Running since 1988, the event is now in its 35th year and continues to attract entries and interest nationwide.

A vibrant Hilary Barry was the MC of the night, and the awards were judged by Liam Bowden of Deadly Ponies, Vicki Taylor of Taylor Boutique and Steve Dunstan of Huffer.

Taking out our Mackersy Property Collections Award and the Mataura Licensing Trust Award of Excellence, was 20-year-old Otago Polytechnic Student, Molly Marsh. Molly had entered the awards in high school, but this was her first entry as a polytechnic student.

Molly’s winning collection, made up of three garments including a large ball-shaped bag, a racquet and a jacket made of turf, was inspired by tennis games during the long, hot Central Otago summers. Her designs wowed the judges via the very strong, exaggerated theme that was made beautifully and provoked the desire to touch.

Mackersy Property’s own Anita Brosnan was there to present the award on the night.
